Xi Jinping was elected president in 2013 and quickly consolidated power. He also worked to remove corruption in the government by purging millions of corrupt officials and emphasizing the rule of law. Xi has been assertive on foreign affairs, notably in the South China Sea and in the countries surrounding the mainland such as Taiwan. Xi has also leveraged international trade to benefit China the most through limiting imports but increasing exports.

During Xi's reelection in 2017, the National People's Congress voted to remove term limits, effectively giving Xi a path to lifetime presidency.
