Jiang Zemin served as the General Secretary of the CCP from 1989 to 2002 and President of China from 1993 to 2003. As General Secretary, Jiang continued the free-market economy instituted by Deng Xiaoping, what he called a "socialism market economy". He was elected President in 1993, and when Deng died in 1997, Jiang became the premier leader of the PRC. As president, Jiang continued to improve relations with the U.S. and foreign nations before stepping down after serving the maximum two 5-year terms allowed.
