The CCP was founded on Marxist-Leninist theory and inspired by the Russian Revolution. It formed an alliance with its rival, the ruling Nationalist Party (KMT), but the competition between the two eventually led to conflict between Mao Zedong of the CCP and Chiang Kai-shek of the KMT.
