jan 1, 1923 - First Equal Rights Amendment Introduced
Description:
Put before Congress by Alice Paul and the National Woman's Party, it was later revised in 1943 into the Equal Rights Amendment. It was sent to states for ratification in 1972, with a seven-year deadline and quickly won 22 of the necessary 38 ratifications. However, the pace slowed as opposition began to organize. It failed to meet its deadline and was reintroduced to congress in 1982 and has been reintroduced before every session of Congress since.
