In this letter to the Norcross cousins, Emily described the horror and fear townspeople experienced with the frequent fires: “We had another fire -- it was in Phoenix Row, Monday a week ago, at two in the night. The horses were harnessed to move the office -- Austin's office, I mean… The fire-bells are oftener, now, almost, than church bells.” She enclosed the poem “We never know we go -- when we are going.”
