960 CE - 1279 CE The Song Dynasty was founded by Emperor Taizu after the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period. During the dynasty, the population of China effectively doubled due to advances in cultivation and agriculture. The Song Dynasty unified large parts of China after a time of political instability, but the northern half was conquered by the Jin Dynasty during the Jin-Song Wars, and thus the Song Dynasty continued as Southern Song in the southern regions of China until its capture by the Mongols.
