The American Civil War Ended on May 9, 1865, when General Robert E. Lee surrendered himself and his Confederate troops to the Ulysses S. Grant at the Appomattox Court House in Virginia, which marked the beginning of the end of the American Civil War. It would be more than 16 months before President Andrew Johnson would announce a formal end to the conflict in August 1866. However, May 9th of 1865 would be considered the end of the Civil War.
