The canal was denigrated by its political opponents as Clinton's Folly. The Erie canal was a Canal in New York. Canal locks were built to accommodate the 500 foot rise in elevation. After about two years of searching, the 425 mile Erie Canal was opened on October 26, 1825, by Governor Clinton.
