The CCP was founded by Li Dazhou and Chen Duxiu, influenced by the ideals of marxism after the bolshevik victory in 1917. Initially, the party had a successful alliance with the nationalist KMT party. However, Chiang Kai-Shek took a violent turn against the CCP with the instigation of the Shanghai Massacre of 1927, purging the KMT of all its communist ties.
