mar 24, 2018 - Xi Jinping's Election

Description:

In March, 2018, the CCP, under Xi Jinping’s reelection, voted nearly unanimously to abolish term limits, ensuring that Xi Jinping would stay in power. Term limits had originally been put in place by Deng Xiaoping to prevent the emergence of another Mao, a leader whose’ rule had gone unchecked at every step of the way. While Xi could have chosen to step down and manage from behind, as many of his predecessors have, he chose instead to consolidate power. Furthermore, he did not name a clear successor to upper party leadership, unlike many of his predecessors. His recent reelection in later 2018 solidified his position as leader of China without many checks or balances.
