jul 4, 2008 - Beijing Olympics
Description:
The 2008 Olympic games were hailed as China’s “coming out”, with developing and modernizing the city, reducing pollution and infrastructure improvement around Beijing. However, the games were held in the shadow of China’s crackdown on freedom of speech and human rights violations. With protests over China’s treatment of Tibet and Uyghurs, the Chinese government began to crackdown on freedom of speech and protest, despite claims that they would open up and demonstrate a growing willingness to embrace globalization. The games demonstrated the CCP’s unwillingness to embrace change and grip on power.
