feb 21, 1972 - Nixon Talks
Description:
Nixon visited China for a week to open up and reestablish a good relationship between the U.S. and China. This was a bold but smart move for Nixon, an advocate for controlling communism even if it meant going through a cold war. Getting China on the U.S.’s side was crucial in containing the Vietnam War since it could be used as leverage in dealing with the Soviets. China, more than ready for another ally in its tense relationship with the Soviet Union, willingly accepted the idea of increased trade between the U.S. and China. Nixon’s visit to China did not cause much instability or violence as it relieved tension between the countries.
