The Tiananmen Square protests lasted from April 15, 1979 to June 4, 1979, the latter date also known as the June Fourth Incident. The protestors were largely university students who were eager for political and economic reform. The protests and demonstrations occurred after a long period of economic liberalization and exposure to foreign ideas and led to violence and the killing of thousands of civilians.
