China's special economic zones are areas where trade and investment operate independently from the central government. These zones are created to help incentivize foreign investment and technology. Beginning in 1980, the first four zones were Shenzhen, Zhuhai, Shantou, and Xiamen, followed by the creation of 14 more in 1984.
