jun 22, 1807 - Royal Navy Attacks the Chesapeake
Description:
On June 22, 1807 an act the Americans considered intolerable was performed by the British. It became known as the Chesapeake affair as the British conducted an unprovoked attack on the American Frigate. This was due to the Captain of the Chesapeake refusing to allow the British to search the ship for deserters to impress. The British ship Leopold then attacked the Chesapeake impressing four American soldiers into the British navy. This was considered an extreme violation of American sovereignty as the Americans were putting up with impressment since 1803. This lead to the American - Anglo tensions rising bringing the two nations closer to war.
