The Kuomintang of China (KMT) is a nationalistic political party in the Republic of China. In 1926, the KMT under Chiang Kai-shek started the Northern Expedition to unite China by defeating the warlords. This lead to a civil war between the KMT and the CCP (who staged the Nanjing Uprising) and a history of conflict between the KMT and the communists. The KMT eventually moved to Taiwan, due to their loss in the battle for political control after WWII, where the CCP gained power.
