Communism has a negative connotation in Malaysia due to the bloody conflict between the Malayan Communist Party and pre- and post-independence government, resulting in many tragic deaths as well as an economic downfall through the destruction of plantations and mines. On the other hand, this narrative focuses on an educated, young, Malay man who believes in the same fundamental ideology as the communist party, but with a different practical understanding of it due to him being disillusioned by the restrictive and oppressive system his people inherited from the colonisers.
