The 1969 general election witnessed the winning of the Opposition over The Alliance where the Chinese marched around Kuala Lumpur, mainly in Malay areas celebrating their victory, taunting the Malays with insults. This led to an outbreak that involved many violent acts where houses, shops and vehicles were burned and people were injured and also killed.

In 2007, Dr. Kua Kia Soong revealed that the riots was orchestrated by people in power based on declassified documents he acquired from the office of public records in London.
