jan 1, 1378 - Papal Schism

Description:

After Urban VI was elected, the same cardinals elected a new pope, Clement VII. This produced a string of popes, each vying with the other for supremacy. The Council of Pisa tried and failed to end the schism, resulting in a 3rd pope. The conflict was more based on politics than theology and was settled in 1417.
