Irenaeus was a disciple of Polycarp., and became the bishop of Lyons. His work Against Heresies was primarily written to refute gnosticism. In it, the doctrine of the incarnation plays a key role, as the goal of creation in which God become united to mankind, against the false teaching of the gnostics.
