Because their prestige was based on their military power and harmony with ancestors, the Shang rulers constantly expanded on campaigns for sacrificial victims. Wu Ding was the longest reigning king of the Shang dynasty and he especially led expeditions against settled people to the west, the most prominent of whom were ultimately enlisted as allies and clients. Wu Ding was in power from 1250 BCE to his death in 1192 BCE
