may 12, 1870 - Birth of Manitoba

Description:

In March of 1870, the provisional government organized the territory of Assiniboia and enacted a law code. Although the Canadian government recognized the "rights" of the people of Red River in the negotiations, their victory was limited.

On May 12, the province of Manitoba was created by the Manitoba Act. Metis land titles were guaranteed and 607,000 hectares were reserved for the children of Metis families. However, these arrangements were mismanaged by subsequent federal governments.
