mar 26, 1599 - The Globe theatre

Description:

The globe theatre is the place were some of Shakespeare´s most famous plays first were performed. The globe was built in 1599 on the south bank of the River Thames.

Going to the Globe was a different experience from going to the theatre today. The Globe was an open-air theatre and plays were only put on during daylight hours in the spring and summer. The audience would cheer the heroes and heroines and boo the villains. One different thing on the stage was that there were no actresses. All the female characters in Shakespeare´s plays were played by boys, wearing make-up and wigs. This can reflect how the society looked like, the women didn´t have as much power at all as men had.
The costumes were made of the finest materials.

The Globe theatre was built with permission by Queen Elizabeth.
