jan 1, 1599 - The Globe Theatre

Description:

The Globe was builded on the south bank of the River Thames in 1599. London back then was growing fast and most Londoners worked hard to make a living. In their freetime they liked to be entertained by for example bull-baiting and cock-fighting.

The Globle was an open-air theatre were the playes were played out during daytime in spring and summer. The theatre were shaped like a globe but it had flat sides. The audiences at the Globe is said to be smelly, therefore a lot of the richer attendants brought perfume with them to sniff to cover the bad scent.

Some of Shakespear's most famous plays were first performed at the theatre. He worked as playwrither and a minor performer.

An acident in 1613 made the theatre catch fire and the playhouse burned down to ashes. Money was raised to build a second Globe and Shakespeare who was wealthy by this time became a part-owner of the new building. It was finally pulled down in 1644 due to the Civil War. In 1997 a new reconstructed Globe opened in the same area.
