jan 11, 64 - Peter is executed

Description:

These bishops took on the title “pope” (papa in Latin means “father”) to show this special place of authority and leadership. Church leaders in cities that were ancient Christian centers claimed supremacy and leadership over their region. When the capital of the Roman Empire was moved to Constantinople, the bishops of Constantinople claimed to be the supreme church leaders in the East. In addition, emperors also laid claims to church leadership through “Caesaropapism.” These conflicts led to eventual divisions within the Church.
