aug 1, 2002 - EU-US dispute
Description:
Question 3b.
WTO rules in favor of the EU in its row with the US government over tax breaks for United States exporters. The EU gets the go-ahead to impose $ 4 billion in sanctions against the US, the highest damages ever awarded by the WTO. The WTO has its Dispute Settlement Mechanism to enforce its ruling decisions. The Dispute Settlement Body has the sole authority to establish “panels” of experts to consider the case and to accept or reject the panels’ findings or the results of an appeal. It monitors the implementation of the rulings and recommendations and has the power to authorize retaliation when a country does not comply with a ruling. The enforcement is international.
