Who: John Humphrey Noyes
What: Humphrey created a community in Oneida, New York. The community was dedicated to social and economic equality, coining the doctrine Perfectionism. They shared anything from land to spouses. One doctrine was Complex Marriage which is where every man and every woman was married to each other
Why:
Cause: Noyes went through a religious conversion; Noye’s doctrine of Perfectionism
Effect: viewed as sinful by critics because of the planned reproduction and communal child-rendering. The community prospered for a while economically, selling silverware, problems started to occur though in 1876 when Noyes son took charge.
Democratic because: Expressed the power of the people to create and practice their own religion
