oct 28, 1793 - Invention of the Cotton Gin
Description:
Eli Whitney applied for a patent of his cotton gin on October 28, 1793. He was given the patent on March 14, 1784, and was not fully recognized by the US government until 1807. It greatly increased the speed in which plantations and farms could produce cotton, as the cotton had to be separated from the seeds by hand before the cotton gin's invention. As cotton production got faster, southern farmers began to rely on cotton farming.
