dec 19, 2016 - 216 Million Cases of Malaria Worldwide; 445,000 Dead

Description:

According to WHO, there were 216 million known cases of malaria, an increase of 5 million over the year before. 194 million of those cases were in Africa alone and Nigeria alone carried 27% of those cases. It is a disease that because the parasite has it's life cycle between the mosquito and human, depends upon areas where mosquito breeding grounds can be found, stagnant water and where the ability to protect against the insects is not as strong. Also because it isn't as big a problem in the Americas, where in 2016 only 875,000 cases happened, malaria is still not given as much attention as it should though it is no longer counted as one of the "Neglected Tropical Diseases".
