Church carved into chimney rock formation, resembling free-standing structures. Fresco interior makes much use of lapis lazuli in paint, though not much gold. Extended Biblical narrative cycle unlike those in Constantinople in focus shifted away from imperial and patriarchal subjects--more freedom in secluded area
Virgin and Child: Eleousa (Virgin of Compassion) in niche; Mary tenderly interacts with Son and looks at viewer, inviting emotional participation.
St. Peter ordaining first deacons: barrel vault fresco, plays on Byzantine concern from evangelization when faced with the growth of Islam
Crucifixion: Apse fresco, cave-like structure draws a parallel between death on cross and birth in cave and also tomb; Christ's human nature is emphasized by stripping to waist and presence of the Virgin and St, John
