apr 28, 2014 - Prom
Description:
Prom was an odd time for me. I was going with a girl, but I still felt exceedingly pressured to wear a dress, so I did. I wish that it would have been more understandable for me to opt into wearing a more neutral type of dressy clothes. I also had makeup on and heels. However, in a time when dress codes are so strict and oddly extremely enforced, I knew I could not. I feared that if I wore a suit, I would get in trouble, similar to a girl named Aniya Wolf, who wore a suit to her prom in 2016 (Flam, 2016). I have seen countless stories of girls being policied at prom for their dresses. I have also seen countless stories of girls being policied for not wearing dresses.
I went with a girl, but still had to dress in an essentialized, heteronormative way. I, a girl, must, of course, be in heels and a dress.
