The first major battle of the Civil War, this battle was an attempted march on the Confederate capital of Richmond Virginia. Each side had about 18,000 inexperienced troops. But in the end, in part due to Confederate reinforcements arriving the Union army was forced to retreat, but the retreat ended up dissolving into a rout as the army flat out ran in the general direction of Washington D.C.Added to timeline:
