jan 1, 1990 - Oka Crisis – 1990

Description:

The Oka Crisis was a 78-day standoff between Mohawk protesters, police and army. At the heart of the crisis was the proposed expansion of a gold course and the development of condominiums on disputed land that included a Mohawk burial ground. Tensions were raised after the death of corporal Marcel Lemay. He was a police officer and the situation were only resolved once the army was called in. Though the gold course expansion was cancelled, and the land was purchased by the federal government, it has not yet been transferred to the kanesatake community.
(Condominiums; a building or complex of buildings containing a number of individually owned apartments or houses)
