I took this photo around 1955, on the outskirts of Damascus, in Ghoutat Dimashq, in the morning. The golden rays of the sun were piercing through the trees and the leaves. I love this photo, that time of day as the sun is warming up. I prepared for it the day before, and I had imagined and aimed for the result, which I got. It confirmed to me my ability as a photographer. I took this picture while on assignment for the IPC in Syria. It appeared on the cover of one of the issues of Iraq Petroleum magazine.
Going back to my favourite photograph, the golden lines of the sun penetrating the tall trees, with the fog rising toward the sky reflect-ing on the ground: that’s seamless elegance and balance. You don’t create it
