Description:
major battle in the Second Punic War. The Carthaginians under Hannibal defeated the Romans under the consul Gaius Flaminius. Hannibal's victory over the Roman army at Lake Trasimene remains, in terms of the number of men involved, the largest ambush in military history. In the prelude to the battle, Hannibal also achieved the earliest known example of a strategic turning movement.
The Roman army, advancing along the lake were very streatched out. Hannibals forces attacked from the mountainous terrain in the north and eventually split the Roman army into three sections. Within 4 hours, most of the Romans had been killed including Flaminius the Roman counsel. Those Romans who escaped were caught and captured or killed by the Cavalry the next day. Along with a Roman reinforcement numbering 4000 men.
