jan 1, 1721 - La Griselda Scarlatti

Description:

In this aria, the eponymous Griselda proclaims her everlasting love to her husband, King Gualtiero of Sicily. This is the last of her trials, which prove to his subjects that she is indeed virtuous and worthy to sit beside him on the throne.

Other than the lovely story, this piece is so notable because it exemplifies the format of da capo aria, with ritornello between each stanza of text in the A section, as well as a contrasting middle B section. After this relative shift in the B section, the aria repeats again "from the top," stopping after the A section has been completed in its entirety.
