jan 1, 1831 - Trail of Tears
Description:
Date: 1831-1850
Description: Native Americans were forced by the government to migrate to Oklahoma on an 800 mile trail filled with cruelty. Soldiers that marched them often neglected them; 4,000 of them died. A total of 17,000 marched the Trail of Tears
Cause: The US government wanted the lands of the Indians, and promised them a new “home” in Oklahoma. Whites viewed Natives as a threat to the lands that Americans thought they deserved, so they decided to “civilize” and relocate them.
Historical Impact: Many of the Natives that walked the trail died (4,000 of them); it was also one of the largest forced migrations in history. Since the trail ended in Oklahoma, that is where many of the remaining Native Americans live today.
