jan 1, 1252 - Inquisition formed

Description:

During the Inquisition, several groups were established within the Catholic church to help dissent the spread of heresy, or ideas that were considered outlandish and contradicted the end-all, be-all power of the church.
In fact, this group was even involved into the early Renaissance with the rise of Protestantism, and even led to the infamous deaths of both Joan of Arc and Galileo Galilei, both for going against the beliefs of the Catholic church.
Perhaps the most well-known subsidiary during this time was the Spanish Inquisition. For more than 300 years, the government of Spain persecuted incredibly heavily. More than 150,000 individuals were prosecuted and at least 3,000 executed at the hands of the Spanish Inquisition, both in the Kingdom of Spain itself and all its territories and colonies in the New World.
