This discovery was made by English Explorer Henry Hudson. He made his first voyage in 1607, when he was hired to find a shorter route to Asia from Europe through the Arctic Ocean. They traveled east along the border of the polar ice pack until they reached the Svalbard archipelago, and was then stopped by ice and was forced to return to England. He proved the north-western route to Asia could not be possible.Added to timeline:
