Causes:
Slavery debate was revived due to debates over the integration of the new territories acquired during the Mexican War
Effects:
Fugitive Slave Act is passed (helps catch runaway slaves and spurs abolitionists in the north), slave trade in Washington D.C is abolished, Texas borders were set and the federal government took over the state's public debt, California was admitted into the union as a free state, and it was established that popular sovereignty would control the expansion of slavery into the territories of Utah and New Mexico
