mar 6, 1820 - Missouri Compromise
Description:
Compromise is achieved in congress in respect to the growing debate over the expansion of slavery
Causes:
Missouri wanted to join the union as a slave state, but in doing so it would have upset the balance between free states and slave states in the United States Senate
Effects:
Compromise was that Maine would be admitted into the Union as a free state along with Missouri, and that slavery would be prohibited north of the 36°30′ parallel (excluding Missouri)
It diffused the escalating debate, delaying the Civil War and allowing the country to prosper a grow for a bit longer
