In 27 BC, Octavian took on the name Augustus, and became the first emperor of Rome. Augustus’ rule brought an end to the centuries of discord and corruption, and brought on a time of peace and prosperity. He made various social reforms, won many military victories, and allowed Rome’s literature, art, architecture, and religion to flourish. Augustus ruled for 56 years thanks to his army and growing support of the emperor. When Augustus died, the Senate elevated him the status of god. This began a long-running tradition of elevating popular emperors.
