nov 6, 1860 - Election of 1860

Description:

The Election of 1860 was mainly focused on slavery. Tensions started to rise within the Democratic Party, whereas the Republicans were looking for an easy victory. The Democratic Party nominated Douglas to represent the North and Breckinridge to represent the South. On the other hand, the Republican Party nominated Abraham Lincoln. The Constitutional Union Party, which focused on abiding by the Constitution and preserving the Union, nominated John Bell. Abraham Lincoln won the election, but only because he won the electoral vote. Lincoln did not come close to winning the popular vote.

The Election of 1860 is significant because Abraham Lincoln would become the next President of the United States. The election led to the secession of the southern states and ultimately the Civil War.
