apr 21, 1966 - Julius' Bar "Sip-In"

Description:

Julius' is the oldest gay bar in NYC, which has been around since 1864 and has been known to have homosexual clientele since the 1950s.
There used to be a law outlawing bars from serving gay patrons lest they get their liquor license revoked, but a group of gay men decided to go on a tour of bars and restaurants around the city for "sip ins" on April 21, 1966 and were denied service in Julius'. After this incident, which was captured by a New York Times reporter, bars were sued and the US Supreme Court ruled in 1967 that bars were not allowed to deny service to "well behaved homosexuals."
The anniversary of the "sip in" is celebrated at Julius' every year.
