This conflict pitted China against France and the United Kingdom (supported by the United States and Russia). This war can be seen as an extension of the first Opium War (1839-1842), in which these powers wished to impose the authorization of the opium trade on the Manchu Empire of the Qing Dynasty, from which the name that has been assigned to him.
