In 1497, da Gama left from Lisbon in hopes of finding India and open a sea route from Europe to the East. In the process, he sailed around the Cape of Good Hope and made many stops in Africa. In May of 1498, he reached Calicut, India. Even though he lost 2 of his 4 ships in the process, he still made 30 million dollars.Added to timeline:
