Magellan set out from Spain with 5 ships in hopes of discovering a western sea route to the Spice Islands. On the voyage, he became the 1st European to cross the Pacific Ocean. Although he died on the voyage, his remaining crew of 18 continued on and became the first people to circumnavigate the world. This voyage uncovered the Pacific Ocean and proved that it is possible to go all the way around the world.Added to timeline:
