jan 25, 1861 - Battle of Fort Sumter

Description:

After South Carolina left the Union and a Confederate government began to form, President Lincoln refused to remove the Union troops still stationed in Fort Sumter. Insistent on keeping them there, Lincoln attempted to restock their supplies which was blocked by the Confederate rebels. Although there were no deaths, the battle marked the first exchange of fire between the Union and Confederacy, setting off the war. More southern states left the Union after the battle as North/South divisions finally boiled over after decades.
