jan 25, 1848 - Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo

Description:

Ending the Mexican-American War, the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo makes clear America’s Manifest Destiny and desire for westward expansion. The U.S. had to pay $15M in damages to Mexico, and gained a huge amount of territory in California, New Mexico, Arizona, and parts of Wyoming, Nevada, Utah, and Colorado as the Rio Grande was set as the new boundary for the Texas border. After a war mostly out of American desire for more territory, the treaty allowed the U.S. to finally achieve its Manifest Destiny but also created the issue of how to handle slavery in the territories, a major tipping point in the Civil War.
