jan 25, 1796 - Washington's Farewell Address
Description:
Towards the end of his second term, George Washington decided that he would retire to his home in Virginia, rather than run for reelection. 2 term presidencies were one of the many precedents Washington would set, with him reflecting on the nation and his presidency in his Farewell address before leaving office. Sensing increasingly partisan times, Washington criticized political parties and warned against their creation, saying that they would doom the nation. Besides urging unity, Washington warned against permanent alliances and set foreign policy. His address played a large role in shaping the way future Presidents would govern and laid out policy that last for decades.
